Our livingroom carpet has seen around 10 dogs that weren’t housebroken, two episodes of whipworm, dog vomit, dirty diapers, baby spit up, formula, a variety of food and about 30 gallons of water from a leaking aquarium. It’s a very tightly woven commercial type carpet of a light color that is absolutely NOT standing up to heavy traffic. To make matters worse it wasn’t installed properly and is wearing in areas without a threshhold.
We have a hardwood floor in our Diningroom/Kitchen (10×20) that I absolutely hate. Not only is it a yellow color that won’t even go with a neutral paint, it too was not installed properly and is warping, etc.
We want a non-carpet floor to cover our livingroom, diningroom, kitchen and hallway. I have heard good and bad things about bamboo, hard wood and laminate flooring. What would you recommend for a very high traffic area, small kids and dogs? We’d like something that will last and not cost a small fortune to put in. The total area (for the sake of a nice round number) is around 600 square feet.
Any brands that are better than others would be great. I’d love something that we can install ourselves.
Also, is there anyway to “recycle” the current wood floor?

We are preparing the walls so we can paint them and we will need to install new baseboard and window trim. Currently we have old vinyl flooring which is ugly, which was applied over another old vinyl flooring. I am hoping to get a new cabinet, sinks, fixtures, and toilet in 5 yrs probably, which is when I would get nice flooring like stone, porceline, or ceramic tile. Should I get new temporary vinyl flooring (either a sheet or tiles), or just wait another 5 yrs until I get the good stuff? Would cost a min. of $100 for a sheet of vinyl.

My husband and I are pretty new to the whole DIY and are not to sure how to go about this. I have read that if the vinyl is not cushioned you need to use adhesive. What am I looking for and what is it called? Also the MDF we want to lay on is our ‘floor’. We have an 85+ year old house with some dodgy floors, all a bit slopey in the 70’s addition of the house. As it is impossible to get willing tradies where we live we put joists on top of our wonky floorboards and installed a new floor of 15mm MDF. Please tell me we can put adhesive on this. All answers greatly appreciated as we are in the throes of it as I type.

Is vinyl flooring suitable for a laundry room?

New cabinets, granite counters & tile backsplash, tile floors & stainless steel appliances incl refrig. New baths with Carrara marble floors & gorgeous vanity with marble counter. Inside laundry w/washer/dryer incl. new roof. Bamboo flrs. Copper plumbing. New windows. 617 sq ft.

I will have to take out approximately 800 sq ft of carpet and some vinyl floor as well. It will be installed over concrete floors, I am not going to level the floor. I have specific instructions not to worry about that. There is some furniture to move. Any ideas of the cost would be greatly appreciated.

I’m going to install some wood floors. Real hard wood is too expensive so I was looking for a cheaper alternative. Does anyone have any advice on wood floor alternatives that holds up well under regular traffic? I have a tiny toy poodle and a 6-year old son. Our floors get regular wear, not overly heavy traffic, but I’m hoping to find something that will last.
Has anyone used the new Allure Trafficmaster vinyl floors?

I know NOTHING about surround sound. I consistently watch movies on both Blu Ray and HD DVD and sports, and play PS3 and Xbox 360. I also do not have a stereo system to play CDs in my living room or my ipod. Can someone make a recommendation? I dont want to spend that much if I dont have to but I will spend it if the quality is worth it. I have high ceilings and bamboo flooring. Thanks!

I am looking for a colour that would look good with black furniture and light-medium blue/brown coloured bedding. The carpet is currently gray but we may choose bamboo flooring instead in the near future.
Also, I am hoping to purchase Benjamin Moore paint, so paint name suggestions would be great!

we want to replace our 13 year old kitchen countertop ( and vinyl flooring) to increase the resale value of our home, but we don’t plan to sell for around 3-4 years, so we don’t want to spend a lot, but we want something that will still look good in a few more years without spending a small fortune for something that we will not be getting a lot of use out of
