Installing New Flooring Over Uneven / Slanted Floor?
I live in an old house, and there is one area in the kitchen where it transitions from one floor level to the other. I have no idea why it is this way, but it is right down the center line of the house, so I am sure there was a structural reason. There is a total drop of 3-4″ over a distance of about 6″, so in effect it’s like a tiny ramp. I have not pulled up the carpet to see what exactly it looks like underneath. I am planning on installing new floors myself on a budget, so re-doing a bunch of structural stuff is not really an option. I need ideas on how to handle the slope, what types of flooring could do this, etc. I was wanting to do a wood / bamboo throughout the house (the house is very small and I want the visual unity).
Thanks for your help!

Can You Lay Tile Over Vinyl Flooring?
If you want to put tile over vinyl flooring without removal of the old vinyl do this:
Install cement board over the vinyl floor (in this case the vinyl would act as your “felt or vapor barrier”) first with cement board screws 8″ on center. Then you can use tile adhesive to glue your new tile on top of the cement board. Once adhesive dried, come back and apply grout.
Installing Wood Floor Over Particle Board?
I about to put bamboo flooring in my house. Our subfloor is particle board. I suggested to my husband that we put down 7/16″ plywood over the particle board then lay down the felt paper and install the floor. The floor is not very level in a lot of areas and it would be the easiet way to level it all out and becuase the warranty states it will be void if it is installed over particle board. My husband just wants to level out the floor with some kind of compound or something then put down the felt paper right over the particle board and just lay the floors that way to save in cost (he isn’t worried about it being warrantied) and because laying plywood over the existing subfloor would make the bamboo floors so much higher then the rest of the floors in the house. It just dawned on me the reason not to lay it over particle board is probably an issue of nails not grabbing correctly. Is there a nail that is riveted or something that will grab into particle board or am I in trouble?

Can I Take Vinyl Floor Tiles And Put Them Over Ugly Ceramic Wall Tiles On Back Splash?
The back splash in the kitchen are small glossy tiles, can’t paint them. Don’t want to have the expense of removing. Would like to take vinyl floor tiles (like the design and cheaper than tile) and put them over the tiles. Is that a problem in general and what would be the best way to do that?

How Do You Tile Over Vinyl Flooring And What Prep Do You Do?
i am asuming that you’re using ceramic tile. if so, you will need to either remove the old vinyl flooring (it will take some work, but it is possible to do) or if you really want to leave the old flooring on place, you will need to attach cement backerboard to the floor and then tile over that. if your subfloor is made of wood (if the room is on a second story it will be) then screwing the backerboard to the floor shouldn’t be hard. I’m not sure though if you’re on a cement subfloor. the backerboard (also called cement board) can be found in the tile section at home depot.
What To Do About Tiny Bugs All Over The Floor In My Bedroom?
They’re little bugs that are extremely tiny, you can barely see them. They don’t move barely at all, and many of them appear to be dead. I got bamboo floors installed last month, could they have come from there?
