HOW TO LAY FELT-BACKED CARPET IN A ROOM
To Lay Felt Backed Carpet first make sure sub-floor is smooth, dry and clean. Roll out carpet and using spray adhesive, spray one corner of the room say 2 feet by feet. Then using the back end of your stanley blade scribe the carpet to the wall making sure carpet has adhered to the sub-floor.
Then using a cutting tool cut the carpet net along the wall and tuck the edge using a boalster or tucking tool. If you do not have a cutting tool then cut free-hand slowly sawing the carpet and checking your cut as you go along. We do not reccommend cutting against the wall as this will score and mark your skirting boards.
Which ever corner you started always make sure you finish in the opposite corner of the room, therefore start stretching the carpet using a knee kicker along the width first and cut, spray adhere and tuck the width wall (as this is the first stretch make sure it is only once and lightly, otherwise you will knock and twist the carpet).
Then once width wall is down and complete, stretch the carpet with a knee-kicker along the length about a foot. Then spray, scribe, cut and tuck the length wall, now you have stability in the carpet as both width and length walls are complete, now we can start to really stretch the carpet pulling the tension tight. Once this is done go back to the length where you stretched up a foot and start stretching up the whole wall making sure you have applied the spray adhesive first. Then scribe, cut and tuck this wall. This leaves just the width wall, now spray glue, stretch, cut and tuck this wall until you have finished the job.
If stretched correctly you should have finished in the opposite corner to where you started. Please make sure your knee kicker is clean and on correct setting to thickness of carpet. There is no need to over stretch a felt back carpet so go easy otherwise you may rip your new carpet.
