What’s The Best Way To Clean A Carpet Without A Carpet Shampooer?
I’m looking for an effective way to clean certain heavily soiled spots on my carpet. What’s the best process and best products to use? I’d like to avoid using harsh chemicals if I can because my daughter has asthma. I’d appreciate any advice offered. Thanks.

Soak up liquid spills by covering them with clean white (or light-colored) towels or paper towels. Scrape sticky substances off carpets with a spatula or spoon. Don’t rub the spill. That will damage carpet fibers and make the stain spread.
To clean the stain, mix 1 cup warm water and 1/2 teaspoon mild liquid soap, such as dishwashing liquid or fine fabric detergent. Apply a small amount, blot by pressing a clean white towel into the carpet and lift. Then repeat the process until the stain is removed. Don’t scrub. Be patient.
After stain is removed, rinse the area with a solution a few teaspoons of white vinegar to one cup water and blot with another clean towel.
Use household ingredients to clean carpet stains.
*Club soda removes red wine stains.
*Use an ice cube to harden gum and candle wax, then scrape off.
*Sprinkle greasy stains with baking soda, corn starch or corn meal. Let stand six hours or overnight. Then vacuum.
Mix 1/3 cup vinegar with 2/3 cup warm water and apply to the stain. Then blot with a clean towel and repeat until the stain comes clean.
Good Luck and kudos for thinking about your daughter’s breathing problems first instead of simple convenience!
Use a good all-purpose cleaner that you know your daughter can tolerate. When spot cleaning, it’s important to wipe away excess moisture or the remaining dirt will settle in and present a more difficult stain to remove later on. I like Greased Lightning for a lot of cleaning chores but I don’t know if that would be right for you.
Investing in a dirt extractor might be a good option. The operating instructions advise using rug cleaners but they will work fairly well using hot water alone. I have a Hoover dirt extractor and have been impressed with it’s cleaning ability and ease of use. Best wishes.
I spot treat my carpet by brushing it with lysol brand cleaner mixed with water then using a shop vac to suck up the excess water. Cheap fix and works very well.
Also, if anyone has pet marks on their carpets this is an awesome fix. It doesn’t cost as much as the commercial pet stain removal products, gets rid of the stains and the odor.
Here is a site that I would highly recommend. They have very high quality stain removal techniques. I would suggest repeating the process after the first application, and rinsing the rug out with cool water in between applications. Best of luck!
You could try a product called CHEM-DRY its a spot cleaner that works really well, just follow the instructions on the can. It doesn’t have a strong smell so you should be ok, It can be found at Wal-mart or HomeDpot for about $4.00.
Sweeper than uses water they work great and you will be surprised what it will pick up . . . it is a wonderful product, but costly.
